How To Make A Sock Monster
Lots of people have asked for tips on how to get going with their own exciting monster creations. So here’s a 1-2-3 ‘How To’ poster to download that i made for the Workshop at Shunt. It’s A3 format so you can see the details. Most important tip is to remember to leave a hole in his arse to stuff him through! ;) If you do make anything, i’d love to see photos – mail them over Monster Makers.

Here he is, fresh and bleary eyed into the world, for your delectation. I got a few shots of him while he limbered up and prepared to squeeze into a jiffy bag, for a ride with Royal Mail to his new owner. And remember – if you ever comes across one after dark, beware. Don’t chuck water on him, or feed him cheese – all hell breaks loose. You have been warned… How to make your own – tutorial here. [...]

Thanks for sharing this! Great instructions. I especially love how the heal makes a worn-out butt.
Said, on February 1st, 2009 at 9:01 am :
Cheers Marc! They sit up well using the heal as the arse. There’s also a secret way to make a cool mouth using the heal ( but he ends up arse-less ;) ). You can gather up the heal from the back, and sew along to make lips and a tounge. They look especialy good with giant eyes. Send us some pics if you make any!
Cheers,Nicky

Said, on July 15th, 2009 at 9:59 pm :
Hi Isabel
Well Basically – You need 2 socks. One will be the body and legs. The other will make the arms ( and optional tail and ears ).
1. Always start with your socks inside out. Lay your first sock flat with the heal towards you and the toes at the top. The toe part will become his head, and the heal his arse.
2. Sew two legs shapes in the straight part of the sock. Curving the feet off and sewing up the inside of the leg, stopping just under the bum. Leave a gap between his legs – very important. You’ll have to stuff him through there later.
Second sock – sew two arm shapes into the straight part of the sock. Keep the ends open for stuffing later.
3. Carefully cut around your sewing lines leaving 5mm at least. Take your body shape and turn it right side out through his bum hole. Turn the arms right side out.
4. Stuff them! Sew up the gap between his legs to stop the stuffing falling out.
5. Sew his arms on. Carefully sew around tucking the rough edges under as you go to leave a nice neat join.
6. If you want you can cut the heal off the second sock and sew it onto his face as a nose / snout ( stuff it lightly).
7. Also you can make little square ears in the same way you made the arms if you like and sew to the side of the head.
8. Face! Buttons for eyes, and bits of felt for the mouth – or what ever you like – go crazy.
That’s about it. All done :) All he needs now is a name…..

1.you put your hand inside the sock and make a mouth
2.you sew the around the mouth to keep it in place(imagine a sock monster without a mouth D=)
3.find some buttons and sew them on to your monster
4.you cut of part of the bottom of the sock and cut it in half for the arms and cut a little bit more for the legs
5.sew all of it together but leave a medium sized hole
